What region binding actually is
Apple Gift Cards are issued by regional Apple Store entities. A US Apple Gift Card carries value for the US storefront; a UK card carries value for the UK storefront. When you redeem, Apple checks whether the card storefront matches your Apple Account's stored region.
If the storefront does not match, Apple may show Code Must Be Redeemed in Another Storefront. For Nigerian sellers, a common pattern is a US-issued Apple Gift Card and a Nigeria-registered Apple Account.
Why a VPN does not work
Apple does not rely on your device IP address for this check. It reads the Apple Account's stored region. A VPN changes your IP, but it does not change the Apple Account region, so it does not unlock the card.
Changing device language or location settings has the same problem: those settings are not the account-region field Apple uses for gift card redemption.
Three practical options when the card is region-mismatched
Option 1 — change your Apple Account region
Apple supports account-region changes, but it can require a zero account balance, a payment method from the new region, and country-of-residence checks. For many Nigerian sellers this is not practical.
