STEP-BY-STEP — APPLE GIFT CARD

How to Redeem an Apple Gift Card (iPhone, iPad, Mac, Web)

Apple makes gift-card redemption fast on every device. This guide walks the redemption flow for iPhone, iPad, Mac, and the web account portal — with one-minute checks to do before redeeming so the card actually works on your Apple ID.

Quick answer

Open the App Store on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac (or visit account.apple.com on the web), tap your profile, choose Redeem Gift Card, then enter the 16-character code. Redemption typically completes in under two minutes.

Before you redeem, do three quick checks: confirm your Apple ID country matches the gift card's country, confirm the card was activated (physical cards from grocery / drug retailers need POS activation), and confirm your Apple ID isn't fraud-flagged. Those three checks prevent the most common redemption errors.

If you hit a problem during redemption, see Apple Gift Card Not Working? for the full 8-step diagnostic. If your card's country doesn't match your Apple ID's country, see Apple Gift Card Region Restrictions.

3 pre-redemption checks

Check 1 — Apple ID country matches gift card country

Apple Gift Cards are country-specific. A US card needs a US Apple ID. To check your Apple ID country: Settings → [your name] → Media & Purchases → View Account → Country/Region on iPhone/iPad. On Mac: App Store → profile (lower-left) → View Information → Country/Region. On the web: account.apple.com → Personal Information.

Per Apple's gift card terms: “Gift Cards purchased in the United States and content codes can only be linked to an Account in the United States and can only be used for purchases in the United States.”

To check your gift card's country: physical card back, email receipt header, or the currency on the original purchase (USD = US, GBP = UK, EUR = EU). For African users receiving cards from Diaspora family, assume the card is US unless the receipt says otherwise.

If they don't match — for example, a US card on a Nigerian Apple ID — Apple will reject redemption. See Region Restrictions for what to do.

Check 2 — The card was activated at point of sale

Physical Apple Gift Cards from US grocery / drug / big-box retailers (Walmart, Target, Kroger, CVS, Walgreens) require activation at checkout by the cashier or POS system. Without activation, the card has zero balance.

Look for an activation notation on the original purchase receipt. If you can't find one, contact the original retailer — Apple Support cannot activate a card that wasn't activated at retail. Apple's support page notes this directly under the “Card is not activated” section.

Cards bought directly from Apple (apple.com Gift Cards, the Apple Store app) are activated automatically.

Check 3 — Your Apple ID isn't fraud-flagged

If you've recently had suspicious sign-ins from new countries, unresolved billing failures, or family-sharing setup issues, Apple may temporarily restrict gift card redemption. Check Settings → [name] → Media & Purchases → View Account for any warnings before you start.

Redeem on iPhone or iPad

The fastest path on iOS:

  • Open the App Store app on your iPhone or iPad.
  • Tap your profile icon in the top-right corner.
  • Tap Redeem Gift Card or Code (under your name and Apple ID email).
  • You'll see two options:
  • Use Camera— point your camera at the gift card. Apple's OCR reads the 16-character code automatically. Best in good lighting with the physical card.
  • Enter Code Manually — type the code from the receipt, email, or physical card. Use this if camera reading fails or you only have a digital code.
  • Tap Confirm when prompted.
  • If successful, your Apple Account balance updates within seconds. You'll see the new balance under your name in the App Store profile.

The full Apple Support flow is documented at support.apple.com/HT201209. If the redemption fails, the error message tells you what went wrong — see Apple Gift Card Not Working? for what each error means.

Redeem on Mac

On macOS:

  • Open the App Store application.
  • Click your profile in the lower-left corner of the App Store window (where it shows your name and email).
  • From the profile page, click Redeem Gift Card (or Redeem Gift Card or Code, depending on macOS version).
  • Enter the 16-character code in the text field.
  • Click Redeem to confirm.

Your Apple Account balance updates immediately. Confirmation appears at the top of the profile page.

If you're redeeming for an App Store / iTunes / Music balance, the balance appears across all Apple devices signed in with the same Apple ID — purchases on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV all draw from the same pool.

Redeem on the web

If you're on a device that doesn't have the App Store app (Windows PC, Android browser, etc.), you can redeem via Apple's web interface:

  • Go to account.apple.com.
  • Sign in with the Apple ID you want to redeem to.
  • Look for the Redeem Gift Cardoption (usually in the Personal Information or Payment & Shipping section — Apple's web interface evolves periodically).
  • Enter the 16-character code.
  • Click Redeem.

The official entry point is documented in support.apple.com/HT201209. Balance is added to the same Apple Account regardless of which device or platform you used to redeem.

If redemption fails

If you hit an error during redemption, the cause is usually one of:

  • Code-entry error — re-type from the receipt, especially watching 0 vs O and 1 vs I
  • Country mismatch — see Region Restrictions
  • Card already redeemed — verify via Apple Support
  • Card not activated — contact original retailer
  • Account-level restriction — contact Apple Support

Your country

Country deep-dive

🇳🇬 Nigeria (NGN)

For Nigerian Apple users:

  • Your local NG Apple ID redeems NGN-denominated cards. USD cards from Diaspora family require switching your Apple ID to US (which needs a US payment method most NG users don't have) or selling the card.
  • Apple Pay is not available in Nigeria, but this doesn't affect gift card redemption — only purchase methods.
  • If your USD card can't be redeemed and you want to convert to NGN, SellCardNow pays out via Opay, Palmpay, Moniepoint, Kuda, and direct bank transfer.

Country note

🇰🇪 Kenya (KES)

KE Apple IDs redeem KES-denominated cards. USD Diaspora cards need country-switching or selling. M-PESA is the dominant local payout rail.

Country note

🇬🇭 Ghana (GHS)

GH Apple IDs redeem GHS-denominated cards. Same Diaspora pattern. MTN MoMo, Telecel Cash, AirtelTigo Money are the primary rails.

Did your card redeem successfully?

If yes — enjoy. Your Apple Account balance reflects the new credit, and it never expires.

If you came here to confirm but realized you can't redeem (Apple ID country mismatch with no path to switch), SellCardNow runs both redemption help and a sell-anytime route — we don't push you to sell if redeeming works.

Decide

Should you redeem it — or sell it?

Redeem it if:

  • You have a matching Apple ID and your balance updated correctly
  • You use Apple services (App Store, iCloud+, Music)
  • The card balance is what you wanted

Consider selling it if:

  • You came here to confirm the redemption flow but realized your card is locked to a country you can't redeem in
  • Either way, SellCardNow runs both redemption help and a sell-anytime route.
